Egypt detected 648 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, bringing the total infections since the outbreak last year to 196,709.
The health ministry reported 43 deaths, bringing fatalities from the virus to 11,680.
500 patients have been discharged from hospitals following recovery in the past 24 hours, bringing total recoveries to 150,924.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi warned earlier this week that the country is on the threshold of a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, urging citizens to adhere to preventive measures especially during the holy month of Ramadan, which begins next month.
Last month, Egypt’s health minister Hala Zayed forecast during a WHO meeting a peak in infection rates in April with the curve declining in May.
The warnings come as it continues a wider rollout of the vaccination programme which it began earlier this month after concluding the vaccination of most of the country’s medical staff.
The expansion in the vaccination campaign comes as the country pushes forward with efforts to secure vaccines for the 100-million-plus nation.
