The Egyptian Ministry of Health detected 783 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the highest daily rise in almost three months, bringing the total cases since the outbreak last year to 207,293.

The ministry also reported 37 fatalities, bringing the death toll to 12,290.

A total of 444 patients have been discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, bringing recoveries to 157,450.

The country has been witnessing a slight increase in the daily infection rate over the past few days as the country is a third coronavirus wave has started, according to Awad Tag El-Din, the presidential advisor for health affairs.

The increase was already expected by the country's top officials, including Minister of Health Hala Zayed, who told a WHO meeting in February that the infection will be on an upward curve in April before retreating again in May.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi also said last month that the country "is on the threshold of a third wave" of the coronavirus pandemic.

The warnings come as the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which witnessed the highest number of coronavirus cases last year, will start in the second week in April.

The government has allowed the resumption of mass prayers but upheld the ban on charity banquets and public ceremonies.
