Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call on Thursday from US President Joe Biden, where they discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian territories and agreed to enhance coordination to contain the escalation as the Israeli assault on Gaza continues for the 11th consecutive day.

El-Sisi and Biden "exchanged points of view on ceasing the violence and escalation in the Palestinian territories," said Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Rady.

The pair agreed to press ahead with "regular consultation" and to enhance "mutual and fruitful coordination" between the concerned agencies of both countries during the coming period to contain the escalation.

The US president praised President El-Sisi's "relentless efforts" with all the parties involved, saying these moves "are balanced and wise and [aim to] achieve security and peace for the entire region."

Biden added that these steps "consolidate Egypt's historical and pivotal role in the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Africa to support stability and settle crises."

He noted that the US administration supports and relies on the Egyptian role in contributing to containing the current escalation and stopping the violence, according to Rady.

The US president also voiced his country's aspiration to promote bilateral ties with Egypt in the coming period in a way that enables the two countries to confront what he described as unprecedented challenges regionally and internationally in light of both sides' mutual priorities.

El-Sisi underscored the significance of uniting all international efforts to contain the flare-up in Palestinian lands.

He also reiterated Egypt's "steadfast" stance regarding the Palestinian cause, stressing the importance of reaching a "comprehensive" solution that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinians in establishing their state.

The Egyptian president highlighted the significance of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, which spans decades, in achieving the common interests of the two countries and facing joint challenges.

"The crises that threaten the security and stability of the region as a whole require strengthening cooperation and [holding] regular consultations between Egypt and the United States to ward off these perils," he stressed.

Over the past several hours, Egypt sent a delegation to Ramallah city in the central West Bank and Tel Aviv more than once to mediate an immediate ceasefire.

The Israeli bombing of Gaza has claimed over 250 Palestinian lives, including many women and children, while over 8,000 have been wounded.

The recent escalation was sparked on 10 May when Israel cracked down on Palestinian demonstrators protesting Israel’s plan to forcibly expel Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah district in East Jerusalem.

Egypt has maintained its position of rejecting illegal Israeli settlements and the annexation of Palestinian territories as well as its full support for establishing a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on the borders of 1967.

Egypt announced on Tuesday the allocation of $500 million as part of an Egyptian initiative for the reconstruction of the strip, whose infrastructure has been devastated by the Israeli airstrikes.

Egypt also announced on Monday that it has allocated 11 hospitals nationwide to receive Palestinians injured in the Israeli bombing of Gaza. It also sent 65 tons of medical aid to aid Gaza.
