Egypt’s Public Prosecution ordered on Tuesday the detention of a Brazilian man for four days pending investigation into charges of alleged sexual harassment of an Egyptian girl in the city of Luxor.
The man is accused of attacking the values of the Egyptian family as well as the victim’s private life by verbally harassing her, a statement by the prosecution's office said.
He is also accused of using a social media account in committing those crimes.
On Sunday, Egypt's Ministry of Interior announced his arrested a foreign man following the posting of a video of him harassing a girl in Egypt.
The video had gone viral showing the renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon and influencer mocking and sexually harassing, in Portuguese, the girl selling papyrus in an unidentified bazaar in Luxor.
In the video, the girl smiles as she shows him papyrus papers while he speaks in Portuguese in a sexual way, taking advantage of her ignorance with his language.
The video was originally shared on his Instagram story before he made his Instagram account private. He also closed his Facebook page.
He was condemned by rights groups and activists in Brazil who also reached out to their peers in Egypt.
Egyptian women are victims of sexual harassment.
Egypt criminalized sexual harassment in 2014, with penalties including jail terms ranging from six months to three years and/or hefty fines.
Last year, the Egyptian Parliament passed a law to keep the identity of victims of sexual assault and harassment confidential to protect their reputation and encourage them to file police reports.
