Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Wednesday that Egypt is planning to vaccinate 40 percent of its population against coronavirus by the end of 2021.

In a press conference held following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday in Cairo, Madbouly said that 2.5 million Egyptians have been vaccinated against the virus.

He added that work is currently underway to make sure that 6 million Egyptian citizens receive vaccinations.

The prime minister added that July will see the first production of coronavirus vaccines in Egypt.

Egypt has signed an agreement to produce China’s Sinovac vaccine through its state-owned vaccine maker Vacsera.

Private sector company Minapharma has also signed an agreement to produce Russia’s Sputnik vaccine in Egypt.

Minister of Health Hala Zayed has said that Egypt is set to receive new shipments of Sinopharm, Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines in June.

Concerning the Egyptian economy, PM Madbouly said in the press conference that the economy has achieved a 2.9 percent increase in growth during January, February and March 2021 compared to the same period last year.

Madbouly added that these numbers are a positive indication of the achievements of the Egyptian economy during the coronavirus pandemic.
