Egypt reports 179 new coronavirus cases, 22 deaths on Sunday

Egypt has started to produce China's Sinovac coronavirus vaccine locally with an initial production capacity of 1 million doses

The number of daily coronavirus cases officially registered by the Ministry of Health continues to decline as Egypt reported 179 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the total infection tally officially to 282,082 since the outbreak began in February 2020.

The ministry also reported in its daily statement on the pandemic in Egypt 22 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 16,264.

The statement said that 459 patients have been discharged after recovering from the virus, bringing the total number of recoveries to 214,087.

Earlier on Sunday , the Egyptian government's Supreme Committee for the Management of the Coronavirus Crisis agreed to increase the capacity of hotels, cinemas, and restaurants to 70 percent instead of 50 percent, as the country expanded its vaccination programme as well as its local production of vaccines. 

Egypt has already started to produce China's Sinovac coronavirus vaccine locally with an initial production capacity of 1 million doses.

Aside from contracting for the AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sinovac vaccines, Egypt has also secured deals for the Sputnik and Johnson and Johnson jabs.
