Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ordered on Sunday the quick formulation of an executive plan to vaccinate all university and school staff and students against the coronavirus.

El-Sisi directed that this measure be executed with haste to minimise the number of interruptions to the incoming school year, according to a statement by Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady.

The president’s remarks came in a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and a group of ministers and top officials.

In early August, El-Sisi revealed the state’s plan to intensify its coronavirus vaccination campaign before the upcoming school year, which is set to start in October.

He also said the state aims to vaccinate “a very large” portion of its citizens by the end of this year.

The Egyptian Cabinet has announced plans to immunise 40 million citizens by the end of the year — representing around 40 percent of the population — to secure the health of the Egyptian people ahead of the anticipated fourth wave of the virus.

Health Minister Hala Zayed also announced that more than 100,000 citizens were vaccinated on Thursday 12 August alone.
