The Environment Ministry announced on Monday releasing five green sea turtles in the Mediterranean Sea after being illegally hunted.

In a statement, the ministry said it was informed through the government's complaint system that the sea turtles were being put for sale in a fish market in Ras El Bar, Damietta governorate, in violation of the Environment Law no. 4/1994.

Environment Minister Yasmin Fouad directed the authorities concerned to launch a campaign to rescue the turtles. Five endangered sea turtles were found at the market.

The turtles were released at Ashtum El-Gamil Protectorate after being examined.

The ministry urged all citizens to inform it about any attempt of illegal trading in endangered species via its hotline: 19808 or WhatsApp number: 01222693333.
