Egypt's Mostaqbal Watan Party dismisses Aswan MP for 'unethical conduct'

Chairman of Egypt's parliamentary majority party Mostaqbal Watan Abdel-Wahab Abdel-Razek ordered on Wednesday the dismissal of MP Hassan Ahmed Khalil, the secretary-general of the party's office in Aswan city, from his post.

Magdy Hassabou, a Mostaqbal Watan Party member and senator, will replace Khalil as the party’s new secretary-general in Aswan city.

Abdel-Razek's order came after what has been described as an "unethical video" featuring Khalil and his Aswan colleague MP Nevine Hamdy went viral on Facebook and other social media outlets.

Hamdy is an Aswan MP affiliated with the Guardians of the Nation Party led by senator and retired army general Galal Haridy.

Khalil has said that the video was shot after he and Hamdy got married two years ago. He said the video was stolen from his private mobile phone.

The second legislative session of Egypt's parliament – the House of Representatives – is scheduled to open on Saturday.

MPs Khalil and Hamdy could face disciplinary punishment.
