Egypt proposed to host the COP 27 in November last year despite the coronavirus challenges, as it is Africa’s turn to host the conference.

Earlier this month, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said Egypt is looking forward to hosting the COP 27 on behalf of Africa in a pre-recorded message before the World Leaders Summit on Climate Change held on the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly.

El-Sisi vowed that if Egypt is to host the COP 27 in 2022, it will be a major turning point in the global fight against climate change, according to the Egyptian presidency.

The president stressed the importance of holding developed countries responsible for reducing emissions in accordance with their international obligations within the framework of the Paris Climate Accords.

El-Sisi said COP 26 can produce tangible results in terms of financing climate action and its mechanisms in a way that contributes to strengthening climate action in developing countries and raises awareness towards climate change.

Each year, a country representing a different region of the world wins the bid to host the summit.

COP 26 is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, next November.

In an interview with Egyptian state’s news agency MENA late in July, Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad said Egypt, during COP 27, will inform participants about national projects in Egypt, taking into account the environmental dimensions that will greatly contribute to reducing global warming.

She cited Egypt's initiative to convert fuel-powered cars to vehicles that run on natural gas or electricity.
