The committee’s decision is in line with the law regulating the performance of the NCHR (94/2003).

A statement by the committee said the new members of the NCHR were nominated by many institutions, thus showing that they have the full trust of these organisations and that they are highly qualified to join the council.

The NCHR will be led by former ambassador Moshira Khattab as chairman and Ambassador Mahmoud Karim Mahmoud as deputy chairman.

The council’s board will include a mix of public figures, such as prominent human rights activists George Ishak and Nehad Abu El-Qomsan; political science professor and writer Nevine Mosaad; Editor in Chief of Ahram Weekly and Ahram Online Ezzat Ibrahim; journalist Mahmoud Saad; lawyer and human rights activist Essam Shiha; and chairman of the Reform and Development Party Mohamed Anwar Esmat El-Sadat.

The reconstitution of the NCHR comes a few days after Egypt declared a new strategy for human rights.

The council is entrusted with supervising the human rights situation in Egypt, releasing periodical reports, and recommending new legislation that can improve the conditions of human rights.
