Former interior minister Hassan El-Alfi. Al-Ahram
He served as the interior minister from April 1993 to November 1997 during the presidency of Hosni Mubarak.
El-Alfi contended during his three-year tenure with a series of terrorist attacks by radical Islamist groups, including the 1997 Luxor massacre of foreign tourists, which left 62 people — half of them Swiss tourists — dead at Deir Al-Bahari Temple in the Upper Egypt historic city.
He resigned from office following the deadly attack.
In August 1993, El-Alfi himself survived an assassination attempt by the Islamic Jihad group.
