The royal couple were received at the airport by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled El-Enany.

They will be received by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his wife, Entissar El-Sisi, at Ittihadiya Presidential Palace later on Thursday, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.

The two-day visit will tackle British-Egyptian cooperation in the field of climate change and religious tolerance, Gareth Bayley, the British ambassador to Egypt said last week.

The royal couple have already been received by Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed El-Tayyeb at Al-Azhar mosque as well. They are set to hold discussions with El-Tayyeb on religious harmony and the role of faith in protecting the environment.

Bayley explained last month that the royals would also visit the sites of ancient and modern Egypt.

“This visit is a strong proof of the importance of the relations between the UK and Egypt and consolidates our humanitarian links,” Bayley said in a recorded video that the embassy posted on Facebook at the time.

The royal couple’s visit to Egypt was preceded by a similar visit to Jordan, both of which are part of the first overseas tour by a senior member of the royal family during the pandemic.

Additionally, the Duchess of Cornwall will focus on women’s empowerment in the country and will be briefed on the stories of Egyptian female leaders as well as matriarchs supporting their families.

Moreover, Prince Charles will celebrate the UK’s support for efforts to protect cultural heritage by meeting a number of craftspeople and conservationists, according to the statement.

The prince will also meet with young entrepreneurs in Egypt’s private sector to discuss innovative businesses in the country and opportunities for adopting environmentally friendly practices.

The royal couple will then visit Alexandria to celebrate Egypt’s ancient culture, according to the statement.

In 2006, during a five-day tour of Egypt, Prince Charles and Camilla visited the Egyptian Museum, Al-Azhar Mosque in Old Cairo, Temple of the Oracle in the oasis town of Siwa, Al-Azhar Park, and Brooke Animal Hospital in Cairo.

They also visited at the time the Commonwealth Cemetery where the Duchess of Cornwall paid tribute to her father’s comrades who died in front of him in the aftermath of the Battle of Al-Alamein.
