A judicial source close to the High Constitutional Court has told Ahram Online that the court was unlikely to issue a final ruling on the constitutionality of Egypt's Parliamentary Elections Law by which last year's legislative polls were regulated.

The same source also said that the court was likely to find the controversial Political Disenfranchisement Law unconstitutional. Application of the law, which has been endorsed by Egypt's Islamist-led parliament, would ban Mubarak-era officials – including presidential finalist Ahmed Shafiq – from holding high offices of state.

The court has been looking into the constitutionality of both laws for the last several weeks. If it finds the Parliamentary Elections Law to be unconstitutional, the People's Assembly – the lower house of Egypt's parliament – would likely be dissolved and fresh legislative polls held.
