former Ahram Online reporter Salma El-Wardany
Egypt's foreign ministry is holding intensive talks with Sudanese officials to demand the release of detained Egyptian journalist Salma El-Wardany.
Egypt's Foreign Minister, Mohamed Kamel Amr, has told the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum to make urgent contact with Sudanese authorities to secure the release of El-Wardany and ensure her safe return to Cairo.
El-Wardany, 25, is a Bloomberg reporter arrested on Thursday morning while covering protests in Sudan, now in their fifth day. She was previously a business reporter at Ahram Online.
El-Wardany was arrested along with blogger Maha El-Senussi while covering demonstrations at the University of Khartoum.
News of El-Wardany’s arrest has spread quickly on the internet. Activists are calling for a solidarity protest in front of the Sudan embassy in Cairo's Garden City at 5pm.
