Ahmed Shafiq's supporters have been protesting at the Unknown Soldier Square in Nasr City district since Saturday.
The open-ended sit-in is reportedly to continue until the demands are met: a democratic constitution, a national defence council, a new parliamentary elections law, the independence of the judiciary and setting stricter guidelines for the prosecutor general in trying cases of corruption.
Shafiq narrowly lost the recent, heated presidential runoff to the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi, who was declared Egypt's first non-military president on 24 June. Shafiq's defeat removes the possibility of impunity and may make him vulnerable to prosecution for alleged crimes committed during the Mubarak era.
