Ebeid, 79, is a high-profile politician, academic, former MP and former member of the Shura Council, the former upper house of Egypt’s parliament.
Ebeid – who joined the Wafd Party in 1983 following its revival in 1978 – is the first woman to occupy the position. She was also the first woman to join the party's high committee.
The former MP served as the political adviser to the party leader in 2018.
Ebeid, who is also a professor of political sciences and sociology at the American University in Cairo, occupied a number of high-level positions including expert for the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa.
Born in Qena governorate, Ebeid was awarded the Legion of Honor with the rank of officer from French President Sarkozy for her support of Egyptian-French relations.
She is the granddaughter of Makram Ebeid, who was a key leader of Egypt’s 1919 Revolution and a co-founder of the original Wafd Party with Saad Zaghloul.
In March, Wafd Party members elected Abdel-Sanad Yamama as the new party leader.
