The minister’s 26-year old son, Ramy Fahim, is accused of murdering his coworker and his roommate – both 23 – in an apartment in California in mid-April, US media outlets reported.

In her first comment on the incident, Makram said on social media she and her family have been experiencing "a serious ordeal" over the charges filed against her son.

"We are going through a difficult time owing to the accusation of my son committing a murder in the United States of America," Makram wrote on her Facebook account.

Makram added that her allotted responsibilities as a minister in the Egyptian government does not contradict at all with her duties as "a faithful mother who bravely faces her son's ordeal."

"Whatever the consequences, as a minister, I take full responsibility for [the duties of] my position… and I make a clear distinction between what is personal and what is public," the minister stressed.

She also asked for prayers for her family and her son in this calamity as well as the victims.

The minster called on all media outlets to strive for accuracy in what they publish and take into account honesty and humanity while dealing with an ordeal facing an Egyptian family awaiting a verdict.

Fahim is accused of stabbing both victims to death. A hearing session is set to be held in June in California, according to media reports.
