In a periodic meeting with members of the parliamentary committee on Wednesday, President of the NCHR Moushira Khattab said the council has completed a plan to follow up on the national strategy on the ground, a statement by the council read.

Tarek Radwan, head of the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, affirmed the need for concerted efforts by legislative and executive authorities as well as national councils to promote human rights.

Radwan stressed the presence of a political will to implement the national strategy.

The country’s 2021-2026 National Strategy for Human Rights was launched by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in September last year to address political, economic, social, and cultural rights for all societal groups.

During the meeting, Khattab said that the council practices its work in light of the national strategy, which has contributed to raising the ceiling for human rights.

The NCHR and the parliamentary committee held an open dialogue to discuss safeguarding human rights and have agreed on holding joint periodic meetings to discuss recent and future workplans.

They also agreed on launching an expanded conference to discuss the impact of overpopulation on human rights.

During the meeting, Vice-President of the NCHR Mahmoud Karem reviewed the outcomes of the NCHR delegation’s visit to Geneva and Bern. He said high-level meetings in the two cities have confirmed the keenness of the countries and institutions concerned with human rights to back the steps of Egypt’s national strategy.

The NCHR delegation recently held meetings in Switzerland with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, the ambassador of the European Union, and think tanks, Karem said.

During her meeting with Bachelet earlier in June, the chief of the NCHR said the council will sign a cooperation programme with the European Union and the UN Human Rights Office on implementing Egypt’s National Strategy for Human Rights.

Egypt has taken several steps over the past months to advance human rights. In April, El-Sisi called for a national dialogue that includes all forces "without exception or discrimination" and revived the Presidential Pardon Committee formed in 2016.

The president has also declared 2022 as a year of civil society.
