In a statement on Friday, the NCHR congratulated President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian people on the anniversary of the revolution, saying it coincides with “serious steps in the human rights file and the start of a comprehensive national dialogue.”
The leap in rights and freedoms across the country has been achieved after “Egypt had crossed an exceptional stage in its modern history by defeating the forces of backwardness and exclusion and the beginning of laying the foundations of the New Republic,” the NCHR said.
The new republic is based on equality between men and women in rights and freedoms guaranteed by the constitution and international human rights conventions observed in Egypt, as well as social justice and the rule of law, the NCHR said.
National dialogue: Serious step
In the statement, the NCHR reaffirmed sincere support to the efforts by El-Sisi and the state to consolidate the culture of dialogue and ensure constructive participation by all segments of the Egyptian people in the upcoming national dialogue.
The national dialogue was called for by President El-Sisi during the annual Egyptian Family Iftar banquet on 26 April with the inclusion of “all political forces without any exceptions or discrimination” and is set to start later in July.
The dialogue is the result of a series of serious steps that started last year with the ending of the state of emergency and the launching of the 2021-2026 National Strategy for Human Rights with directives by the president to expedite the process of implementing its provisions, the council said.
President El-Sisi launched the country's new human rights strategy in September of last year to address political, economic, social and cultural rights for all societal groups.
“The launch of the national dialogue between the various political currents and social forces comes as a culmination of the steps to implement the National Strategy for Human Rights and lay the foundations for building a new republic,” the NCHR said.
The “new republic” guarantees freedom of opinion and expression for everyone in a way that ensures their participation in building a modern civil, democratic state, the council added.
The recent reconstitution of the NCHR and the subsequent approval in a free vote in the House of Representatives of the national human rights strategy constituted “another positive sign of the seriousness of the state in dealing with the human rights file,” the council said.
The NCHR also lauded important developments in dealing with the comprehensive concept of human rights in Egypt over the past six months.
These developments were evident in the reactivation of the Presidential Pardon Committee in April and the subsequent release after presidential pardons of a number of prisoners who had received final court rulings in successive batches, the statement added.
“The NCHR appreciates the serious steps dictated by the national interest and the sincere desire to build a society in which all citizens participate in strengthening the foundations of democracy,” the statement read.
The council added that Egypt’s national efforts in this regard currently enjoy great international attention and appreciation.
The anniversary of the 30 June Revolution – which is a national paid holiday – marks mass demonstrations by millions of Egyptians on that day in 2013 to demand that then Islamist-President Mohamed Morsi leave office.
Marking the anniversary on Thursday, El-Sisi said in a televised address to the nation that Egypt will continue to build an advanced state, a secure homeland and a stable and vibrant society.
