The meeting was held at the government headquarters in New Alamein City under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.

The move aims to increase the penalty for the possession of illegal mobile phone signal boosters.

The draft law bans importing, manufacturing, assembling, possessing, using, operating, installing or marketing any telecommunication equipment until after obtaining a permit from the concerned authorities.

Such equipment also has to be approved by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), according to the bill.

The draft law stipulates that violators face imprisonment for one to five years, as well as a fine of EGP 2 to 5 million.
