A court in Jeddah on Wednesday adjourned until 5 September the trial of Egyptian human rights lawyer Ahmed El-Gizawi, who is accused of smuggling prescription drugs into the kingdom.

El-Gizawi was arrested at Jeddah airport in April 2012 and accused of smuggling 21,000 Xanax pills into the kingdom. Under Saudi law drug smuggling potentially carries the death penalty.

The family of El-Gizawi, as well Egyptian activists, called on newly elected President Morsi to help secure El-Gizawi's release during his visit to Saudi Arabia last week. 

Journalists were allowed to attend the session.
