El-Tarras served as the chairman of the military’s Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI) from 2018 to 2022 and as the commander of the Egyptian Air Defence Forces.

El-Sisi appointed El-Tarras as the presidential adviser for military affairs in 2016.

The Senate, which was reinstated in 2019 and inaugurated in 2020, is composed of 300 members; two-thirds are elected, the rest are appointed by the president, according to the law of parliament’s upper house.
