The statement was issued in response to information circulating on some websites and social media accounts regarding a possible extension of the deadline, which the cabinet has firmly denied.

Representatives of human rights organisations in Egypt met on Sunday with National Dialogue coordinator Diaa Rashwan and other officials to discuss their concerns ahead of the dialogue sessions scheduled for May.

The attendees had also called for facilitating the registration of human rights organisations wishing to regularise their status under the NGO law, including an extension of the deadline.

Law 149/2019 had mandated that all NGOs must formalise their status in the maximum of a year following the publication of of the law’s bylaws in 2022.

Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj declared on Wednesday that no further extensions will be granted to organisations that fail to meet the deadline, citing the two six-month grace periods that were previously given.

As of last week, 32,222 NGOs, including foreign organisations and regional federations, have filed requests for legalisation.
