The occasion was the NEA's inaugural board of directors' meeting, following the completion of the board and the establishment of the permanent executive apparatus through presidential decrees.
During the meeting, the NEA emphasized the formulation of a clear strategy for effectively managing the upcoming elections and addressing recurrent challenges.
In line with this objective, the executive apparatus of the authority was entrusted with reviewing past administrative and regulatory decisions, preparing a comprehensive report on them, and continuing the process of updating and refining the voter database.
A key focus of the NEA's discussion was raising voter awareness about the importance of active participation in the forthcoming elections.
The authority also explored ways to harness the potential of technological advancements in managing and monitoring the electoral processes.
Egypt’s upcoming presidential election
The deadline for opening candidacy is set for 3 December 2023, as per the Egyptian constitution.
In the second paragraph of Article 140 of the constitution, the procedures for electing the president of the republic must commence at least 120 days before the end of the presidential term. Additionally, the announcement of the election results must be made at least 30 days prior to the conclusion of this period.
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi was elected on 2 April 2018 and his term expires on 2 April 2024, General Coordinator of the National Dialogue Diaa Rashwan said, noting that this means it is crucial that the procedures of the candidacy and the announcement regarding the presidential election dates take place before 3 December.
The Wafd Party's Higher Council is expected to convene soon to determine a presidential candidate, while the People's Republican Party declared its intention to participate and will nominate a candidate after receiving the majority's approval from the party's Higher Council.
The Democratic Peace Party has already selected its chairman, Ahmed El-Fadali, as its candidate for the election. Additionally, liberal parties under the Free Current coalition have also announced their plans to field a candidate.
