Cairo University maintains its position as one of the world’s best 500 universities in 2012, according to a report published by China’s Shanghai University on Friday.

The prestigious learning institution, which was founded in 1908, is the only Egyptian university that has made it into the top 500 and continues to hold its position between 401 - 500 in the global ratings.

"Having Cairo University among the 500 and upholding its position is a result of the efforts made by the entire staff," Hossam Kamal, president of Cairo University told MENA Friday, adding that one of the main reasons the university did so well is because of key scientific research done by its professors.

Cairo University launched a scheme in 2008 which followed international standards and increased scientific research fellowships, staff motivation, international research collaborations and global visibility through publishing in international science publications.
