Egypt’s historical sites have been visited by large numbers of Egyptians during Eid, according to Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

The most popular sites are the Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and the Citadel.

Luxor and Aswan are also popular destinations for Egyptians during this year's Eid festival, Ibrahim added.

The number of Egyptian visitors is much higher this year than last year and there are more Egyptians than foreigners, he noted.

The Citadel's Mohamed Ali mosque, which was opened for Eid prayers for the first time in decades, received hundreds of worshippers on the first day of the Islamic holiday.

The Giza Zoo has seen a drop in visitor numbers due to a lack of maintenance work at the site.
