The draft resolution restores the previous provision that requires applicants to purchase real estate worth at least $ 500,000 to be eligible for citizenship.

In March, the Egyptian government reduced the value of the real estate required of applicants for citizenship, allowing them to buy property at no less than $ 300,000.

According to the resolution, the cabinet will also form a unit to examine applications for naturalization.

The amendments also allow applicants to pay the equivalent of the $ 10,000 fee required for proving the purchase of real estate in Egyptian pounds.

Furthermore, the existing decree will include further information identifying the documents required of property buyers seeking citizenship.

These documents include a copy of the property purchase contract, a copy of the property licence, utility bills (if applicable), and proof that the specified amount has been deposited in one of the banks licensed by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) through a foreign bank transfer or by proving its entry through a customs port.

In addition, the applicants must provide a statement demonstrating that they will not sell the property before five years.

They should also provide evidence that the property is registered with the Real Estate Registry or is supervised by a government authority in one of the governorates.
