Requests submitted by senior Muslim Brotherhood figure and ex-MP Mohamed El-Beltagi and Islamist preacher Safwat Hegazy for investigations to be opened against former prime minister and presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq have been forwarded to the Ministry of Justice Saturday.

El-Beltagi and Hegazy accuse Shafiq of hiding evidence of the killing of protesters during the 25 January 2011 uprising, when he was the newly-appointed prime minister.

Prosecutor-general Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud submitted the requests to the justice minister in order for him to appoint a judge to handle the investigation.

Shafiq and the Muslim Brotherhood have been at each other's throats since Mubarak's last premier reached the presidential elections' runoff round in June. The Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi only narrowly won against him.

El-Beltagi previously filed a complaint to the prosecutor-general's office in June against Shafiq in which he accused the latter of slander and triggering false accusations against the Islamic group, after statements Shafiq made about the Muslim Brotherhood "representing sectarianism."

Several political figures and activists have accused authorities of intentionally preventing any investigation of Shafiq following requests filed by employees of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which he headed since 2002 before becoming premier during the 2011 uprising.
