AP, Monday 7 Feb 2011

The German Economy Ministry said Monday that it will not approve any new arms exports to Egypt over concerns about over the human rights' situation there amid anti-government protests.

The ministry said in a statement that the suspension was effective until further notice. It said it was also reviewing whether to take action on arms shipments that have already been approved.

Germany prohibits arms exports to countries where there are allegations of human rights violations.

The Economy Ministry says Germany exported €22 million in weapons to Egypt in 2010, down from €77.5 million in 2009.
