Sisi inauguration a historic milestone on way toward new republic: Egypt MPs

Members of parliament said that the swearing in of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday marked a significant milestone on the country’s way to building a new republic.

El-Sisi, who is set to begin a new six-year term on Wednesday, took his oath at the new parliament headquarters in the New Administrative Capital in a grand inauguration ceremony.

Several parliament members expressed their confidence in El-Sisi’s vision and said they stood united behind his wise leadership to continue the journey towards better horizons, they told state news agency MENA.

The swearing-in was followed by the whole world as well as “all Egyptians with their eyes, minds, and hearts,” said Senator Phoebe Fawzi.

“It is a period no less important and rich than the past ten years in which the president assumed responsibility, representing a full decade of building and reconstruction, and the establishment of a new republic, that meets the ambitions of millions of Egyptians, and restores Egypt’s status and deserved priority,” she added.

Representative Nasser Othman, secretary of the Constitutional and Legislative Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, said the event is a new beginning for “Great Egypt” in the era of the new republic, whose foundation is development, prosperity, and a decent life for all Egyptians.

During the inauguration ceremony, El-Sisi outlined his priorities for politics and foreign affairs, economic reforms, social protection, and urban development.

The president expressed his intention to safeguard Egypt’s national security amid a turbulent regional and global situation, vowing to uphold the nation’s interests.

State officials, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Hanafy El-Gebaly and Speaker of the Senate Abdel-Wahab Abdel-Razek, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Head of the General Intelligence Service (GIS) Abbas Kamel,  attended the event.

Also present were the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayyeb and Pope Tawadros II, the pope of Alexandria and patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
