Ahram veteran journalist Ezzat Ibrahim nominated to chair Egypt’s State Information Service

Ahram Online has learned that veteran journalist Ezzat Ibrahim, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Ahram Weekly newspaper and Ahram Online news website, has been nominated to chair Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS) to succeed Diaa Rashwan.

Rashwan has held the SIS president post since 2017 upon a presidential decree.

Ibrahim's nomination coincides with widely circulated reports of nominating Rashwan to head Egypt's Supreme Council for Media Regulation (SCMR).

The official announcement of appointing Ibrahim and Rashwan to their new posts is expected within days.

Ibrahim brings a wealth of experience to the SIS, having served in various prominent positions at Al-Ahram, Egypt's largest press group and one of the most influential newspapers in the Middle East, Egypt's National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), and the Egyptian Centre for Strategic Studies (ECSS).

Who is Ezzat Ibrahim?
 

Ibrahim held several positions at Al-Ahram Institution, including the Managing Editor of Al-Ahram’s daily newspaper (2014-2017) and Al-Ahram's Bureau Chief in North America, covering both Washington and New York (2009-2013).

Moreover, he serves as a member and spokesperson for Egypt's NCHR. 

He also holds board positions with the Union of African Journalists and the ECSS.

Distinguished fellowships have further highlighted his international experience in the past two decades. Previously, he advised a US Congressman on Middle Eastern issues as a Congressional Fellow and visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution (2003-2004).

In 2006, Ibrahim received Yale’s World Fellows Program Fellowship, when he started writing a series of articles on the history of Islam and Jihad in the US historical newspapers.

In addition, he holds a Master's degree in International Relations from Sussex University (UK) and a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Cairo University.

His areas of interest include international relations, the relationship between the West and Islamic societies, American-Egyptian relations, US foreign policy, US politics, and media and cultural studies.
