Court issues ruling upholding right of former NDP members to run in Egypt's upcoming parliamentary polls

Egypt's Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) on Sunday issued a ruling supporting the right of former National Democratic Party (NDP) members to run in Egypt's upcoming parliamentary elections.

The now-defunct NDP had been the ruling party under Egypt's ousted president, Hosni Mubarak, for 30 years.

The SAC defended its controversial decision by asserting that it would be "unacceptable" to deprive any Egyptian citizen of his or her political rights, "including the right of candidacy in any legislative council," as long as he/she did not violate the legal conditions of his/her candidacy.
