Street vendors blocked Talaat Harb Street in the heart of downtown Cairo on Sunday night in protest at an ongoing campaign to remove them from the streets.
Authorities in Cairo have been targeting unlicensed street vendors and kiosks for over a month.
Vendors chanted: "We will not pay," "We will not leave," "Ministry of Interior, we are not thugs."
Large numbers of security forces and police were monitoring the protest.
At one point a protester reportedly attacked a car, but security forces intervened to prevent an escalation.
Authorities in Alexandria on 7 September raided unlicensed kiosks and street vendors on Nabi Daniel Street, removing eight book kiosks and destroying their stock.
