Egyptian-American columnist Mona Eltahawy was arrested on Tuesday for spray painting over a pro-Israel advert on the New York subway which equates Israel with civilisation and Palestine with Muslim radicals and savages.

"In any war between the civilised man and the savage, support the civilised man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad," the advert said.

"This is non-violent protest, see this America," Eltahawy said in the video posted on the New York Post website as police officers were arresting her.

"I'm an Egyptian-American and I refuse hate," she added.

The 46- by 30-inch ads are posted in 10 Manhattan stations, including the busy Grand Central and Times Square Stations.

The American Freedom Defense Initiative, a pro-Israel group spearheaded by activist Pamela Geller, paid $6,000 for the ad space.
