Mohamed Adel, a blogger and leading member of the April 6 Youth Movement revolutionary movement, criticised President Mohamed Morsi in a statement on Monday: "The movement rejects any presidential or military protection for [former military council members] Tantawi, Anan, ex-General Hussein El-Roueini and other Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) members who committed crimes against civilians during the period of SCAF's rule."
"No one should violate the law. No matter how much time passes, Tantawi, Anan, El-Roueini and [military police head Hamdy] Badeen will stand trial for the crimes they committed against the public."
Hussein Tantawi was the head of the military council and minister of defence, and Sami Anan the military chief of staff, until they were compelled to retire by Morsi in August.
Adel also stated that the movement will continue pushing for the of SCAF members trial even though the prosecutor general has been 'ineffective' in pursuing cases against them.
The statement read that the former military rulers should be investigated for their alleged role in the killing of protesters.
Earlier on Thursday, President Mohamed Morsi denied recent news reports that a travel ban on Tantawi and Anan was issued.
Morsi had appointed Tantawi and Anan as adisers to the president following their retirement and awarded them high state medals.
Army forces were accused of assaulting and killing protesters more than once during the interim rule of the SCAF, which lasted for nearly a year and half following Mubarak's ouster in February of last year.
Dozens were killed during clashes with security forces around the Maspero building, in Mohamed Mahmoud Street and near the Cabinet offices in Cairo in October, November and December respectively. The ruling military council is held responsible by some anti-SCAF forces for the deaths and injuries of protesters.
