Muslim Brotherhood leader Essam El-Erian faces charges for insulting anchor Gehan Mansour

The General Prosecution has referred a case against Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) deputy head Essam El-Arian to the misdemeanour court for insulting TV anchor Gehan Mansour.

El-Erian accused the anchor, who hosts a weekly show on the private Dream television channel, of acquiring foreign funds to attack his party in addition to preventing him from stating his opinion freely on her show in early October.

According to an official document received from the General Prosecutor by Al-Ahram Arabic website, El-Erian has been referred to the misdemeanour court and not the criminal court as had been circulated in some media reports.

El-Erian has rejected the accusations against him filed by Mansour and announced that he tried numerous times to apologise to Mansour. Mansour, however, stated that the only apology she would have accepted was an official apology on air.

El-Erian recently lost internal elections for the chairmanship of the party, held 19 October, to Saad El-Katatni.
