More than 33 political and activist forces call for demonstrations to take place on Friday 23 November in memory of the violent events of Cairo’s downtown Mohamed Mahmoud Street.
Prolonged street battles erupted between protesters in November 2011 after security forces tried to violently disperse a sit-in at Tahrir Square, leaving at least 47 dead and hundreds injured.
The statement released called for demonstrations to demand those responsible for the killings and injuries to be held accountable.
The event is to consist of several marches that will all unite in Mohamed Mahmoud Street where the clashes took place.
A press conference is to be held on Monday 19 November to announce the details of the Friday 23 November demonstration.
Participating groups include: The Egyptian Current, Free Egyptian movement, Kazeboon, Mosereen, No to Military Trials campaign, "We will find them" campaign (a campaign launched to find the revolution's missing), Justice and
Freedom Youth, Kifaya, Revolutionary Socialists, National Association for Change, Tahrir Doctors and Doctors without Rights.
Political parties participating include the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, the Socialist Popular Alliance Party and the Constitution Party.
Named "Eyes of Freedom," the Friday demonstrations will be held in commemoration of the slain activists and the many who lost their eyes.
Eye injuries were common during the violent events of November 2011.
Activist Ahmed Harara, who first lost one eye during the 18 days uprising, lost his second eye in the Mohamed Mahmoud violence and became one of the many well-known faces of the revolution.
A police officer is now facing trial for being filmed being saluted by a fellow policemen for aiming at a protester’s eye.
