Egypt’s reform campaigner Mohamed ElBaradei says 'we will not forget the rights of the martyrs'

Mohamed ElBaradei, Egypt’s famous reform campaigner and founder of the Constitution Party, hinted on Wednesday that demonstrators in Mohamed Mahmoud Street in downtown Cairo should maintain the peaceful nature of their protests.

Protesters commemorating last year’s clashes in Mohamed Mahmoud, a street leading to the iconic Tahrir square, have engaged in fresh confrontations with police forces that left scores injured.

The clashes, which started on Monday, are still ongoing.

“We will not forget the rights of our martyrs and who gave their lives for this nation and we will not give up the peacefulness of revolution,” ElBaradei, a popular figure among the youths who ignited last year’s popular uprising, said on Twitter.

Similar clashes last year left more than 40 dead in one of the bloodiest days since autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak was deposed on 11 February, 2011.
