Ahmed Shafiq’s resignation came after the January 25 Youth Coalition held a meeting with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces last week, says the coalition spokesman.

Nasser Abdel Hameed, the group’s spokesmen, told Ahram Online that they expect more ministers from the old regime to be sacked in the coming days. The ministers expected to be removed include Mahmoud Wagdy, minister of interior, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, minister of foreign affairs and Mamdouh Mary, minister of justice.

Abdel Hameed added that it is possible that the coalition will halt the sit-ins that were scheduled to be held tomorrow and the following Friday after Shafiq stepped down. However, he expects more protests to be held to demand that the rest of the revolutionary demands are met. 

These demands include that presidential elections are held before parliamentary elections, and the creation of a law governing party formation to give the youth who want to form political parties a chance to do so.

The demands also include the dissolution of the state security apparatus, the release of all political detainees and the trial of all those who organised the “Battle of the Camel,” on 2 February that resulted in the death of many protesters.
