Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi met with 48 representatives of university student unions Saturday and requested in the meeting a list of all university students detained for political reasons in order to review their cases for possible release.
The two-hour meeting Saturday afternoon at the presidential palace in Cairo mainly discussed problems with curricula and the securing of campuses and dormitories, according to deputy head of the Egyptian Student Union (ESU) and the head of Al-Azhar University Student Union Ahmed El-Bakri.
Baqari added that during the meeting, the president affirmed that Al-Azhar University is among his top priorities, following two separate poisoning incidents at the university dorms in the past two months, affecting hundreds of students.
In April, independent student candidate Mohamed Badran won elections to head the ESU by a narrow margin against El-Bakri who represented the Muslim Brotherhood in the elections.
