Egypt officially rejects the African Union's unilateral suspension of its membership, Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdel-Ati writes in a letter to all of the union's member countries.

The letter rejects the AU membership suspension both in "form and substance," as well as any need for a forum to discuss the Egyptian situation.

"Egypt is capable of managing the current situation amid a popular insistence for implementing [the revolution's] demands according to [the nationally consented on] roadmap," Abdel-Ati affirmed, citing the constitutional declaration issued Monday that includes a "timely" plan for a constitutional referendum and presidential elections.

"The letter reaffirms [Egypt's] deep regret of the AU's inability to recognise the nature of the popular revolution the country witnessed as tens of millions took to the streets in 30 June to demand their rights and snap presidential elections," Abdel-Ati elaborated.

The AU's suspension of Egypt's membership on Friday, announced two days after the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi, is considered a standard response to any interruption of constitutional rule by a member state.

Abdel-Ati argues, however, that the AU's decision was based on a "misinterpretation of the African resolutions on the unconstitutional change of governments," including the misinterpretation of the Lomé declaration of July 2000.

"The AU rushed in taking its decision without responding to the Egyptian proposal of sending a team of notable African figures to familiarise themselves with the situation and prepare a fact-based assessment," Abdel-Ati added.

The AU's Peace and Security Council suspended Egypt's participation from all AU activities. Secretary of the Peace and Security Council Admore Kambudzi told Reuters the suspension will continue "until the restoration of constitutional order."

Egyptian interim President Adly Mansour, who was appointed after Morsi's ouster, issued a constitutional declaration that includes a timely transition to presidential elections.
