Mohamed Morsi told the African Union Wise Men Committee that he was the victim of an injustice and had been wrongly ousted from power during a Tuesday meeting between the former president and the AU delegation.

The African Union Wise Men Committee delegation discussed the outcome of Tuesday's evening meeting during a press conference in Cairo on Wednesday.

According to former president of Botswana Festus Gontebanye Mogae, the delegation told Morsi that as a leader, he must contribute to achieving peace and ending violence.  The delegation stressed during the meeting that it was not casting blame for the violence, but that all sides in Egypt needed to come together to reach a solution to the crisis.

"Mohamed Morsi told us that he cannot do anything in the current situation as he does not have contact with the media or his followers," said Mogae, adding that the delegation pressed on Morsi to encourage his supporters to achieve peace.

Mogae stated that the African Union Wise Men Committee met with Interim President Adly Mansour, army chief Abdel Fatah El-Sisi, Interim Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei and foreign minister Nabil Fahmy. The delegation also met with representatives from the April 6 Youth Movement and the Tamarod 'Rebel' Campaign.

"We did not come here to make judgement on matters, but to hear from all parties" said Mogae, adding that a summary of the visit will be presented to the African Union secretariat.

Alpha Oumar Konar, the former president of Mali who heads the 'Wise Men' delegation, stated that the committee will return to Egypt in order to re-assess the situation.  Konar added that if inclusive reconciliation is not reached, Egypt may be on the path to a civil war.
