Ministry of telecommunications did not order internet cut, says minister

Minister of telecommunications, Magued Osman, claims security officials were behind decision to suspend web access during January 25 revolution

The Ministry of Telecommunications did not give the order to the shut the internet and cut off mobile lines during the January 25 revolution, says minister Maged Osman.

Osman said that the ministry tried to resist this order which was given by security officials during the revolution, adding that investigations are underway regarding what happened during that period.

The minister added that it is important to have a legitimate discussion on when it is appropriate to cut communication lines in Egypt and that the decision should not be made by security officials.

On 28 January, now known as the "Friday of Anger", the internet was shut down in Egypt and mobile lines were cut. Mobile lines were reconnected the next day but the internet was inaccessible for five days.
