Human rights lawyer Ragia Omran released in the early hours of this morning after being detained for 'insulting' an army officer at a polling station

Lawyer and activist Ragia Omran was released from custody at 2:00am this morning.

Omran, a human rights lawyer, had been monitoring yesterday’s referendum when she was arrested by an army officer who asked her to leave the polling station where she was working. She was taken to the Cairo police department headquarters in Bab El-Khalq, where she was detained.

After being asked initially by the officer to leave the polling station, Omran produced her permit from the Supreme Judicial Comittee meaning that, unlike him, she was allowed to be present as voting took place. Omran was accused of assaulting an army officer.
