Articles dealing with Egypt's coming parliamentary and presidential elections were the first articles to fail to pass a vote by Egypt's 50-member constitutional amending committee, currently holding their second and final voting session.
Article 229, which states that the next parliamentary elections are to be conducted through a mixed system of two thirds individual candidacy and one third party lists, was rejected after 18 members voted against it, 27 voted for it, and three abstained.
The vote requires at least 75 percent approval for an article to be passed.
Article 230, which outlines the timeline of the coming elections and states that parliamentary elections must be held after a minimum period of 30 days and a maximum of 90 days following the ratification of the constitution shared the same fate as Article 229. The article also stipulates that presidential elections must be held within a period of 30 days after parliament convenes.
