Liberal party compares draft charter with 1954 version that completely banned military trials of civilians

The Constitution Party has condemned an article in the draft constitution permitting military trials of civilians.

It contrasted the article allowing 'conditional' military trials of civilians with the 1954 constitution which completely banned them.

The 1954 constitution said no civilian should be tried unless by a regular court. It also banned private or exceptional trials, and trials of civilians in military courts.

The 2012 constitution, drafted during the rule of Mohamed Morsi, allowed military trials of civilians in cases of "assault on the armed forces"  as does the new draft.

On Sunday, the 50-member committee approved amendments to the new draft charter. Committee head Amr Moussa submitted it to interim President Adly Mansour on Tuesday for approval. It will be put to a national referendum.
