Egyptian-Syrian Eid Salah was killed yesterday during violent protests that erupted in the city of Daraa in the southern Syrian suburbs, according to Egypt’s Ambassador to Syria Shawki Ismail.
Salah died when a bullet penetrated his chest shortly after leaving a mosque, following Friday prayers. He was 24.
“The embassy received an anonymous phone call from one of Eid Saleh’s neighbours, saying that he had been killed by gunshot during the protests in Daraa,” Ismail told MENA in Damascus on Saturday. “His funeral is to be held today."
“The embassy has called on Syrian authorities to investigate the incident and keep us posted," Ismail added.
Salah’s late father was Egyptian while his mother is Syrian. He was born and bred in Daraa.
Daraa, the centre of a wave of protests against the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad, reportedly saw 17 people killed on Friday after government troops opened fire on protesters.
There are seven Egyptian families in the city, Ismail said.
