EgyptAir halted its flights to Libya on Friday after two rockets hit Tripoli airport runway.

Two rockets hit the runway at dawn, the Libyan News Agency (LANA) reported. Motives behind the attack are unknown, but residents of the Libyan capital reported hearing gunfire throughout the night across the city, the agency stated.

An outward and an inward bound flight from Cairo were cancelled, an EgyptAir representative said.

A Libyan official told Reuters that all flights into the airport had been halted after the rocket attack at dawn, but staff are hoping to reopen the airport within hours.

Workers are currently removing the debris on the runway, he said.

Libya has been facing a deteriorating security situation since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011.
