Egypt's Constitution Party to officially announce its stance to presidential race

Ahram Online, Tuesday 15 Apr 2014

A source told Ahram Online earlier this week that the Constitution Party is likely to announce its support for Hamdeen Sabahi's presidential bid

The liberal Constitution Party will hold a press conference on Wednesday to announce its stance regarding Egypt's upcoming presidential elections.

The conference comes after the party conducted several meetings and surveys regarding the anticipated race.

It will be attended by the party's head, Hala Shukrallah.

On Monday, a source speaking on the condition of anonymity told Ahram Online that the party will likely announce its support for Hamdeen Sabahi's candidacy during Wednesday's conference.

If the Constitution Party does announce its support for Sabahi, it would be the first political party to do so after Sabahi's Karama Party. Sabahi is also already backed by the Egyptian Popular Current Movement, which he heads.

Sabahi will face a tough challenge to win the 26-27 May presidential vote, highly expected to be won by El-Sisi, whose popularity has skyrocketed since he led the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer.
